Brewing Celebrity Custody Battle

Louis Tomlinson, 24, is a member of the boy band One Direction. He caused an uproar with his fans when it was reported in July 2015 that he was expecting a baby with Briana Jungwirth, 23. Briana is a celebrity stylist with whom Louis had a causal dating relationship. Louis is now dating a Hollywood actress.
When Louis and Briana’s son, Freddie Reign, was born on January 21, 2016, all seemed well. Both parties posted photos of themselves holding their son on their social media accounts and thanked fans for their support. Commenting on being a dad, Louis said, “It’s great. I’m enjoying it a lot and I’d definitely like more kids, but not just yet. It’s intense. It’s really exciting.”
After Freddie was born, Louis purchased for Briana, and their son, a three (3) bedroom home in Calabasas, California, and he is renting a $21 million dollar home nearby to stay close. However, now there are reports that Louis has retained counsel to wage a custody fight for Freddie. His main issue of contest is that Briana is not allowing him to see his son unless and until she receives more child support.
This is a common tactic used by the parent with more parenting time or with primary residential rights to the child. However, while it may work in the short-term, the courts never countenance this behavior. Child support and parenting time are should always remain separate issues and one should never be given in exchange for the other.
Louis and Briana’s case is likely to settle out of court, but it is a prevalent topic in family and parentage law that regularly arises.
