Sweden’s Renouncement of Paternity Proposal

Sweden is widely cited as one of the most progressive countries when it comes to the issue of women’s reproductive rights.  A recent poll found that 84 percent of the country supports a woman’s right to choose to terminate a pregnancy.  This is compared to the approximately 51 percent support for legal abortion opportunities held by citizens in the United States.

Now, according to the “youth wing” of Sweden’s Liberal Party, expectant fathers in Sweden should have the right to “legally abort” their unborn child through the 18th week of their partner’s pregnancy.  Said legal abortion would be irreversible and would mean that the man renounces all parental duties and rights to see the child once it has been born.

The Swedish Liberal Youth argue that men should be given equal say in whether they wish to become a parent and take on all the responsibilities and duties associated with same.  The party believes the “legal abortion” for men would promote equity between the sexes in the early stages of a pregnancy, giving men a chance to opt out.

In Sweden, pregnant females have up to the 18th week of pregnancy to abort their fetus.  This is the same amount of time the youth wing is asking that men receive for their “legal abortion.”
