There are many different facets of preparation for a divorce, both physically and emotionally. One of the questions I hear the most often from potential clients is how they can prepare for for when their spouse may file for a divorce. Here is a summary of some items to consider from a Chicago divorce attorney:
(1) Where are your valuables? Do you have a safe place for your family heirlooms, jewelry, or other items that may ‘disappear’ upon the filing of a divorce? If there is something you want to protect, make sure it is in a safe location so that it doesn’t “disappear”.
(2) Keep your cool. Do not do anything to disturb the status quo of the household. No name-calling, no fighting, no throwing or breaking items. Do not do anything to intimate your spouse or other household members as this can often lead to filings for an order of protection or exclusive possession of your residence.
(3) Do you have safe passwords on your e-mail, bank accounts, phones, etc.? If you plan to start speaking to an attorney on your phone or via email or text message, you should ensure no one else has the password (although there is no way to be one hundred percent certain)
(4) Talk to a divorce or family law attorney about your rights. Talk to them about what the law looks like in Illinois divorce cases similar to yours, so that you know what to expect. Have an idea of an attorney or two whom you feel comfortable with and could use in the event that you are served with divorce papers.
